Examining the Linguistic Prejudice and Representation of  Women in Proverbs in Traditional Moroccan Communities

This project will explore selected Moroccan proverbs and show how women are represented in these wise sayings in Moroccan culture. The project will show how oral traditions are used as tools to define and determine women’s roles in patriarchal cultures/communities.

Dr. Awatif Boudihaj presently serves as an assistant professor at the Academic Development Unit in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at Al Akhawayn University in Ifrane in Morocco. She previously taught both in Saudi Arabia and at Sultan Qaboos University in the Sultanate of Oman. A graduate of the School of Education at the University of Leeds in UK, Awatif is a former English instructor and currently a study skills, critical thinking and research skills professor. She is also the past academic coordinator of the Center for Academic Development, writing center director and tutoring services coordinator at Al Akhawayn University. Awatif’s research interests are in the area of developmental education with an emphasis on developing learners’ study skills, critical thinking skills, research skills, emotional intelligence, and writing skills. She has also published articles related to foreign language policy and education in Morocco.
